The Hicks Finals day dawned wet and blustery. In the lead up to the day, there had been some doubt as to whether we would be able to play due to Storm Ashley. Happily the worst of the storm did not hit West Hill and so it was all systems go. That said, conditions were less than ideal but the difficult playing conditions did not deter any of the participants, all of whom coped remarkably well. We were treated to some excellent golf, with several of the Surrey First Team, past and present, playing for their clubs.
In the Hicks Trophy, the final was contested by Burhill and last year's winners, Hindhead. It proved an exceptionally close tussle. With the match score standing at 2-1 to Burhill, Jing Wang Ji and Kate Powell went to extra holes, while Katie Lavender of Hindhead was going up the 18th one up on Lindsey Evans-Smith. In the end, Jing won on the 20th hole to secure victory for Burhill and so Katie and Lindsey's match was called in. This is the first time since the competition started in the early 1960s that Burhill has won the Hicks Trophy. Congratulations to Sally Blackwood and her team.
In the Hicks Plate, Walton Heath took on Tandridge. This was always going to be a difficult match for Tandridge as Walton Heath had an exceptionally strong team, their no. 5 having a lower handicap than Tandridge's no. 1 player. However, handicaps can mean nothing in match play, it is all about how you play on the day. Tandridge put up a good fight but in the end, Walton Heath were too strong. Congratulations to Alison Gee, Hicks Captain and her team on winning the Hicks Plate.
Huge thanks to West Hill for hosting the finals. The course was in excellent condition and afternoon tea very delicious!
Burhill will go forward to represent Surrey at the English Women's Champion Club competition at City of Newcastle, 30th-31st August, 2025.
