Junior Development and Training are a priority for SWG. We want to ensure that all girls, whatever their ability, enjoy golf and become lifelong golfers. The development and training programmes we run vary year on year to take account of the needs of the players involved.
Our training staff, officials and volunteers are all committed to player development, have the appropriate qualifications and adhere to the SafeGolf accreditation.
The programmes are split across five squads:
Elite: This squad is aimed at girls who are committed to developing their golfing skills. All players will have single figure handicaps.
Performance:This squad is aimed at girls who are interested in progressing and developing their golfing skills. All players will have handicaps of 15 and below. Ages will vary
Acadmey: This squad is aimed at girls who are developing their golfing skills, all will have handicaps in the 16-36 range.
Development: This squad will include girls relatively new to golf, many of whom will have a handicap and or be a member of a golf club.
Rookie: This squad is aimed at younger girls who are relatively new to golf and generally do not have handicaps.

The County is working with a number of highly qualified and enthusiastic coaches. The training programme is not designed to replace or conflict with the girls' existing home coaching but rather to support theses existing relationships, adding further value and opportunity to aid their development. Home coaches are more than welcome to attend our sessions and the Surrey coaches are always available to answer any queries that home coaches may have. If they should wish to attend a session, please ask them to liaise with the appropriate Lead Coach.
We have 5 Training Groups
Elite: Lead Coach - Sam Truman – Reigate Hill Golf Club
Performance: Lead Coach - Simon Peaford - Silvermere
Academy: Lead Coach - Simon Fowler – Royal Mid Surrey
Development: Lead Coach - Molly Moore – Reigate Hill Golf Club
Rookie: Lead Coach - Molly Moore – Reigate Hill Golf Club
From time to time other coaches who are experts in their fields may come and help with some of our sessions. These coaches are always supervised by our county appointed coaches.
The groups focus on the following key pillars:
Plan and prepare properly for tournament rounds. Make the most of your practice rounds by collecting and recording the right information about the course/test ahead.
Reflecting after a competition or practice session can be invaluable to setting practice priorities going forwards. Using statistics to determine where you are versus where you want to be is a hugely important part of this.
Becoming more and more aware of your swing tendencies and how to fix them will help you become more self-sufficient, so when you are away from your coach for longer periods of time you can stay on track.
It’s important to be able to move sufficiently well to swing the way you and your coach would like you to swing. Mobility/strengthening exercises are an important part of maintaining & improving peak performance.
Developing and testing the skills that are most important for lower scores.
Make every swing count. There simply isn’t enough time to be wasting. Your practice sessions should be planned and structured properly to get the absolute most out of the time you have available. Practice sessions should be Inspiring, confidence building and very specific about what they are trying to achieve.
7. Competition
All our sessions will involve some form of skill based or on-course competition. Competing and measuring yourself against your peers is hugely beneficial in helping you determine where the various elements of your game are and where they need to be. It can also add pressure to practice which is a great thing to get use to!
8. Inspiration
We like to think that all our sessions will help to inspire our Surrey girls but just to be sure we will be running specific sessions designed to do just that. For example, spending the day with peers and coaches at a big tournament or playing with better players in the pro-am.
9. Fun & social
Our girls' programme has and always will be about having fun with friends. We want to work hard but have fun in the process.
It’s important to us that we help create a supportive environment within the programme and that we help the girls develop the behaviour and mindset of elite players. We will be available to offer help and advice whenever and wherever it is needed.
