The Surrey Women’s Golf Women in Golf Charter Champions Network met on Monday 14th October at Worplesdon Golf Club. Our special guest was Lauren Spray, Women and Girls in Golf Manager, England Golf.
The meeting was a great success. Over 25 clubs sent their Charter Champions or representatives to exchange ideas on their Charter goals and achievements. For those not already signed up to the WiGC, it was a chance to hear how other clubs have persuaded key decision makers to get involved with the Charter, set goals and start working towards them.
Jane Poyntz, the SWG Charter Champion and Charter Champion Network Co-ordinator, presented her findings on the Charter objectives of Surrey clubs, providing an interesting insight on how the Charter is working to change attitudes to women's involvement in golf and at golf clubs across Surrey.
Lauren Spray, England Golf Women's Development Manager, also presented the very latest research from England Golf on women's participation and profile across English golf. We were the first to hear this research which is, quite literally, hot off the press! Lauren brought her England Golf colleagues: Emma Carberry, Club and County Support Officer, Victoria Crosbie-Cowley, Regional Manager, Emma Highwood, Head of Women's Development and Jade Paul, Co-ordinator, all of whom helped to facilitate a break out session examining the challenges and successes of the clubs in the room.
It was a great session and much appreciated by all. Huge thanks to Worplesdon Golf Club for hosting the event.
Surrey Women's Golf would like to encourage all clubs to sign the Women in Golf Charter. Club Champions and those wanting to persuade their clubs to sign the Charter are all invited to join the SWG Women in Golf Charter Champions Facebook Group where they can ask questions and exchange ideas with other clubs.
Please contact me if you are interested in finding out more about the Women in Golf Charter or have any questions.
SWG signed the Women in Golf Charter, an initiative launched by the R&A to encourage more and better participation by women in golf, in June 2021. This demonstrates our committment to providing a welcoming and inspiring environment in Surrey for women and girls to play golf or work in the golf industry. As Surrey Women's Golf we continue this work.
The SWG has set the following goals:
1. Ensure excellent governance within the SWG at all levels;
2. As a SafeGolf accredited county, ensure policies and procedures remain up to date;
3. Encourage all golf clubs in Surrey to sign the Women in Golf Charter;
4. Deliver initiatives annually targeting women/girls aligned with key England Golf campaigns;
5. Encourage participation by more women and girls in golf across the County;
6. The SWG Communications commitee will continue to raise our presence on social media;
7. Appoint a County Charter Champion who can assist with the promotion and reporting of the Charter - Jane Poyntz
