Surrey Senior Teams

Seniors are aged 50+ and Surrey has a number of teams competing in both scratch and handicap matches.  If you are interested in playing senior match golf, please contact one of the team managers below.

Senior Scratch League Team

This competition was estabalished in 2014 by Scynthia Larsen who identified a gap in the Surrey Senior calendar for scratch team golf.  She set up the league with four other counties and presented the Mulligan Larsen Bowl as the trophy.

Surrey play five counties in the Senior Scratch League: Kent, Middlesex, Sussex, Hampshire and Essex.  Each county fields a team of six players and the format is 18 holes scratch match play.  All matches are played between May and the end of September, with a Jamboree event at the end of the season.  To read the league rules, click here

The selection criteria for the Senior Scratch League team is driven primarily by handicap but will also take into account match play performance.  The Senior Scratch Team Captain will aim to offer a range of players the opportunity to compete in the Senior Scratch League matches. All players must be qualifying seniors (aged 50+) on the day of the match and be a member of a club affiliated to Surrey.

The Surrey Senior Team Captain for these matches is Belinda Pope

Inter-Counties Senior Team Stroke Play Championship (Scratch)

A Team of four players competes in the Inter-Counties Seniors Team Stroke Play Championship every September. This team is selected after the Surrey Senior Championship. 10 counties participate in the event, in which the best three out of four scores count, with the fourth to count in the event of a tie.

The 2024 Championship was played in Berkshire at Mill Ride Golf Club on Monday, 16th September.  The Surrey team was:

  • Belinda Pope (Hindhead), Captain
  • Debbie Richards (Burhill)
  • Maggie Whittet (Hankley Common)
  • Tana Churchill (Cuddington)
  • Reserve: Julia Brook (Walton Heath)

The Surrey team played well recording a three score aggregate of 248 but were pipped into second place by just one shot by Sussex.  Sussex won the trophy with an aggregate of 247.

In 2023, the competition was hosted by Sussex at Highwoods Golf Club, Bexhill-on-Sea.  The Surrey team was:

  • Debbie Richards (Burhill), Captain
  • Karen Francis (Fulwell)
  • Julia Brook (Walton Heath)
  • Susan Glover (Hankley Common)
  • Reserve: Jackie Kingswell (Tyrrells Wood)

Host county Sussex took the 2023 title with an aggregate total of 243, closely followed by Berkshire on 244 and, in third place, Surrey on 245.  Congratulations to Susan Glover who shot the best individual gross of the day with a 78, one of only two scores under 80 in very tough weather conditions.
