The Pearson Trophy is run by a committee formed by representatives from each of the Home Counties.  Sally Cooper-Parry is the Surrey organiser.

Worplesdon represented Surrey in the finals day they lost out to Hertfordshire in the morning. The team from North Middlesex were triumphant and take away the South Region Pearson Trophy for 2023. Report

Pearson Trophy Surrey Cup Finals Day 2023 - West Hill Golf Club. Wednesday 14 June 2023

After 62 teams had played 204 matches Roehampton, St George’s Hill, West Surrey and Worplesdon arrived at West Hill Golf Club very early on the morning of Wednesday 14 June 2023.  The thunder threat from earlier in the week had fortunately dissipated and the sun was shining.  Players and caddies congregated in the club house to prepare for the day’s golf ahead.

The referee Bruce Wright, an old hand when it comes to Finals Days, had arrived and we were ready to go.  He had a relatively quite day and only had to cope with a bit of slow play and a few drop issues.

Kathryn McKimmie, West Hills’ Lady Captain was our Morning Starter and the day commenced promptly at 8.30 with the first match between Roehampton and St George’s Hill followed by West Surrey and Worplesdon. 

The Roehampton and St Georges’ Hill match was very closely fought with the two squads sitting in the clubhouse biting their nails at 3 matches all.  The last match concluded in  Roehampton’s favour, meaning Roehampton progressed to the Final for the second year in a row. The semifinal between West Surrey and Worplesdon was sitting at 3 matches to 1 when Worplesdon managed to secure the 4th win.  The final was set;  Roehampton vs Worplesdon, a re-run of one of last years’ semi final. 

So the losing se finalist teams and winners of the Rose Bowls are West Surrey Captained by Celia West and St Georges Hill Captained by Alenka Young.

Following the delicious lunch the finalists returned to the course for a 2.30 start.

The matches were started by Anne Mills, the Chair of the Inter-County Pearson Committee who happens to be a member at West Hill.

Thanks go to Chris Braidwood and Anne Mills for supporting the event, relaying the half way scores in the morning and afternoon from tee 10,  presenting the Trophies and generally supporting the players and the organizers.

The Final was unbelievably close – The first match went to Worplesdon, the second to Roehampton,  match 3 concluded on the 18th to Worplesdon, with match 4 also going Worplesdon’s way.  3 Matches to 1.  There were 3 matches  out on the course with Roehampton up in 2 of them and the other all square in the other.

Match 7 went Roehampton’s way making the tally 3 – 2.   Match 5 went to the 18th green where Worplesdon’s Christine Barker-Goldie managed to secure the win to take the score to 4-2. 

A hard fought win for Worplesdon.
