Third win for Surrey in Stovold Trophy
At one stage we thought this match was destined not to take place. Met office yellow warnings of thunder and lightning were still in place as we arrived early at Hartley Wintney GC in Hampshire, but out went the players, most in their full waterproofs, umbrellas open and firmly in place. Some of our younger players, refusing to don waterproofs and seemingly oblivious to the pouring rain; happily referring to their sodden tops as merely becoming a brighter pink when soaked! Not such happy faces on our more seasoned players, one of whom discovered that her waterproof bag had developed the ability to form puddles within the pockets!
Hampshire were clearly more at ease in the dreadful and difficult conditions and eased to a 2.5/0.5 lead in the foursomes. Some sombre Surrey faces at lunchtime but a quick and simple message from the (non-playing) Captain seemed to reverberate ‘just go and win your matches’! Changes of shoes and socks were required, one player donned some shoes that she had inherited from Lottie Woad which clearly inspired her.
The forecast was still bad and we expected to hear the klaxon and have to evacuate which would have been a disaster for Surrey as the afternoon matches would have likely been halved resulting in a Surrey loss. However it was not to be and the weather was kind to us (most of the time). We needed 4.5 points to win.
We soon heard that the nearby Hampshire Senior Championships taking place at the Army GC had been abandoned due to flooding but Hartley Wintney greens and fairways drained well and play continued. The team rose to the challenge and brought in wins in all six matches – a fabulous turnaround. Many congratulations to all that played. One more match (against Sussex) to go at Banstead Downs GC on 21 August.
